/ ABOUT

Plotting Healthcare was a project I took up during my Biodesign fellowship.

The project is an endeavour to demystify and decode the complex and convoluted Indian Healthcare System. A key motivation for me was the dearth of documented data for Healthcare in India as compared to other developed countries.

/ THE PROCESS

With over three months in the field the length and breadth of the health system observing healthcare delivery in public and private centres. We then made extensive maps noting down the nuances of the health services in India like different patient journeys, referral pathways, stakeholders and their hierarchy, information flow and flow of funds. After drawing a dozen maps or so for different departments and health centres, the system structure started to take shape in our minds.

The information plotted down was collected through field visits in and around Delhi/NCR and Haryana; visiting health centres ranging from primary to tertiary centres. This inculdes covering villages, the Aanganvadi centres, 4 Sub-centres, 3 Primary Health centres, 1 Community Health centre, 6 District/Private Hospitals, 12 private clinics, meeting 26 clinicians and over 100 patients. In the private landscape we visited clinics, nursing homes and large multi-speciality hospitals. It was then that I set out to make a system map of the Indian Healthcare system.
